Where do they come from?

Do you ever wonder where certain expressions come from?

Like,
  • It's as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.
Umm, why are fish in a barrel?? This was mentioned on a NCIS episode during the marathon I watched yesterday and I thought it was a good point.
  • Sleep like a baby.
Really? You want to wake up crying every few hours? Go for it.
  • Sleep like a rock.
Rocks sleep? I did not know that.

Those are ones that I could come up with on my own, but then I did a Google search for "sayings that don't make sense" and came up with a few more.
  • It's always in the last place you look.
Umm, really? Isn't it because you stop looking after you find it? I mean, it couldn't be in say, the third out of fifth place you looked?
  • For Pete's sake.
Who's Pete?!
  • Free Gift.
Gifts aren't free?? Well, in that case, don't get me anything for my birthday, Christmas, other holidays etc. because I don't want to have to owe you money...

Something else that doesn't make sense to me. I was watching TV yesterday, a commercial came on advertising a product. The final screen shot says this: "We'll give you this $40 product ABSOLUTELY FREE! Money back guaranteed if you aren't satisfied." What money are they giving you back?! It's an 'ABSOLUTELY FREE' product.

I'm a bit on the sarcastic side today, can you tell?
